Located in Kumogahata, Kita-ku, Kyoto, the Shimei-in Temple is a remarkable monolithic temple of the Shingon sect. Also known as Konkomyoji, the temple is dedicated to Fudo Myoo and is said to be a direct creation of Kobo Daishi (Kukai) after a request from Emperor Junna. The mountain is honored with the name Iwayasan.
To maintain the sanctity of the temple, visitors are not allowed to take photographs, eat, drink or bring pets with them beyond the temple gate.

Renowned Japanese writer Ryotaro Shiba once wrote about his bizarre encounter at Shimyoin, which he later shared with the celebrated director Hayao Miyazaki. Miyazaki was inspired by Shiba’s story, and it served as a basis for the animated film “Princess Mononoke.”
The temple’s precincts offer a serene and tranquil atmosphere with small waterfalls and clear streams that add to its mystical charm. Despite its hidden gem status, the Shimei-in Temple remains a unique and unforgettable experience, a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
