Getting to Miyama: How to Access the Hidden Gem of Rural Kyoto

Miyama is a picturesque rural town located in the northern part of Kyoto Prefecture, Japan. Although it is located in a remote area, it is still easily accessible by public transportation.

The most common way to get to Miyama is by taking a bus from Sonobe Station on the JR line. You can catch a direct bus from either the Kyoto Station Bus Terminal but they operate seasonally. The bus ride from Sonobe takes around one hour and costs around 1200 yen per person. If you prefer driving, you can rent a car in Kyoto and drive to Miyama. The drive takes around 1.5 hours, and the route is scenic with views of mountains and rice fields. However, keep in mind that the roads in Miyama can be narrow and winding, so it is important to drive carefully.

If you are coming from other cities in Japan, you can take a train to Soobe Station and then transfer to a bus to Miyama.

Once you arrive in Miyama, the town is small enough to explore on foot or by bicycle. If you’re planning to stay overnight, some of the traditional kayabuki(thatched) houses offer pick-up services from the bus stop or the nearest train station.

Miyama is a beautiful and tranquil town worth visiting for anyone seeking a peaceful escape to rural Kyoto, a great destination for a day trip or a longer stay.
